Both of my parents had been married before they married each other... My Mom for eleven years, and my Dad for nine....They never had children, (altho I always thot I had step siblings somewhere) but they never showed up....My Dad was married again for a short time between the first wife and my Mom.....
My Dad had given his second wife a beautiful family heirloom wedding ring with a blue diamond in it. Very ornate setting, and somehow I ended up with the ring....
My Dad had given it to his second wife just a few months before Pearl Harbor... After PEARL HARBOR, he enlisted, she left him, gave his ring back, and a short while later they got a divorce... He later met my mother,(he was stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas,) my granddad introduced them, and they eventually married and I was born when he was somewhere in France.....
For over forty-five years I kept this ornate ring in my various jewelry boxes. Would look at it from time to time, and wonder if PEARL HARBOR had anything to do with my Dad and his second wifes divorce......War is so hard on people.....
Four years this winter, my Son informed me he had met a beautiful girl, whom he had brought home for us to met us several times, and he wanted to marry her. He had met her while she was a student at the University of Texas. They were taking a train from Austin to Longview and he was going to propose to her on Christmas Eve on the train....She had said she liked antique looking rings, and wanted a ruby in it, and he had been every place in Austin trying to find the perfect ring...Had found several, and wished I could see them.
I told him about the mounting I had that was a family heirloom and would he like to see it. Yes, he exclaimed, and I mailed it next day air. He loved it, had it appraised, bought a ruby for it, and he presented it to my now daughter in law on their train ride Christmas Eve 2002 coming to our place.....
They married in Tokyo, Japan the following Spring. Her name is Nahoko Yamamoto Harvey, and she is our Breath of Fresh Air, as my daughter says.....
I don't know what my Dad would say about Naho (as we call her) and his family heirloom ring. I pray he would see her, as the rest of the family does....Although he could be quite the bigot if I remember correctly.... She is beautiful inside and out, and sweet, and good to my son, and I love her very much.....He dated some beautiful girls, but this one was just made for him......And yes Daddy, she is Japanese, and her maiden name is Yamamoto, but she had nothing to do with PEARL HARBOR.......Her family sends us gifts every New Year, and we get beautiful letters and cards from them. I hope to met them someday....
How old does a child have to be to quit worrying about what a parent thinks? My Dad has been gone for 41 years.....He would be 97 year old.........And I still need his approval....
